Friday

Today in class we went over the last 2 tests that we've taken. Mr. Schick said we could redo the test, but the highest grade we could get is a 70%. Which is better than one of my grades on my test.  It is not fair for the people who actually got a good grade on test the first time.

Wednesday

Today in class we had our test. Some of the questions were really hard and some were super easy. I knew almost all of the questions about types of religion. The first multiple choices I didn't really know were gonna be on the test, but luckily I knew the answer. I was really nervous to see what grade  I got. Well I didn't do as well as I wanted too. I was surprised  because I studied a lot and thought I was going to do good.

tuesday

Today Mr. Schick was not here. I studied for the test tomorrow. I made some flash card with definitions and facts about each religion. I am a little nervous about the test, but I have been studying really hard. I hope I get a good grade on this test.

Monday

Today in class we finished watching the movie. I really enjoyed this movie and wish it was longer. It showed us how different India and there culture is from the United States. Mr. Schick told us that we will probably have a quiz on this movie.

Tuesday, November 25, 2014

Tuesday

Today in class we watched more of the movie. This movie is scary and a little intense. I was a little confused in the beginning because I was absent yesterday and i missed some of the movie. This movie kinda leaves you on the edge of your chair wondering what is gonna happen next.

Monday

Today I was not in class. I was sick. Hopefully I will be feeling better and can go to school tomorrow.

Friday

India is very different from America. There is so much trash in the India waters. Kids play, drink, and wash clothes in the same river that the trash is in. They trade  a lot of items for money. This is there way to get some more money because they are so poor. India's houses are in horrible shape. There are a lot of kids who don't have parents, just roaming around. Hundreds of people would storm into a town and just beat them to death because they are Muslim. India is so poor and they have so many people but not enough jobs. Most people get money from trading or stealing. Houses are really run down and have no beds. There schools are jam-packed and teachers are abusive.

Wednesday

Today in class Mr. Schick wasn't here. I worked on the extra credit assignment. I found a couple of songs that show pull and push force. Riptide by Vance Joy, Take me away by Natasha Bedingfield Home by Phillip Phillips. Riptide and Take me away shows push force. Its makes you want leave. Home by Phillip Phillips makes you want to stay where you are. This song shows pull force.

Tuesday, November 18, 2014

Tuesday

Today in class we started working on the extra credit and the assignment. To get extra credit we have to find a couple of songs that show push and pull force. Our assignment is to find the national anthem and find out what it means in English. Below is the National Anthem in China and below that is the translation. English Translation: Arise! All who refuse to be slaves! Let our flesh and blood become our new Great Wall! As the Chinese nation faces its greatest peril, All forcefully expend their last cries. Arise! Arise! Arise! Our million hearts beat as one, Brave the enemy's fire, March on! Brave the enemy's fire, March on! March on! March on! On!

China's national anthem is really weird. I feel like it repeats its self to much and it kinda scares me. It reminds me of angry people about to fight. This is very dark and scary national anthem.

Monday

Today in class we started a new unit. The first part of class we talked about the academic competition this weekend at Bel Air. John Carroll won 1st!!! Mr. Schick then showed us how to play. We played a little round of trivia. Most of the questions were pretty hard. Mr. Schick then showed us what we got on our test. He hasn't graded to essay yet. Hopefully I did good on the essay. We talked about which  states call "soda'. States call it soda, pop, and coke. At my house we call it soda.

Test Day

Today in class we took our test. The test was on the Presidents and the countries government. Some questions were easy and some questions were hard. The harder questions were facts about each it president. It was hard to remember all in facts about these Presidents. The essay was pretty easy because we talked about it in class a couple days before.

Wednesday

Today in class Mr. Schick told us that our test will be Friday instead on today. We are not having the test today because in the review powerpoint, Mr. Schick added peoples powerpoint. They were private so we couldn't see their projects. I am happy he changed the test to Friday, That gives us 2 more nights to study. Today we also finished watching the other projects and took notes. Now I have to study for the test!!!!

Tuesday, November 11, 2014

Tuesday

Today in class we studied for tomorrows test. Mr Schick wasn't here today. Delany, Megan, Ella and I made a study guid. We wrote down all the information on the powerpoint. We then quizzed each other on the leaders and their type of government. Todays class made me more prepared for the test. Tonight I will study and hope that I get a good grade.

Monday

Today in class we watched the presentations. Since we had a one hour delay our class was cut short. So not everyone got to share. We still have two more projects to watch. One group started their project but did not finish. Tomorrow we will finish those and review for our test on Wednesday. Today we watched the projects on Germany, US, Russia, and Syria. I think our test is going to be all the presentations. All the facts about the president and the country's type of government. I am a little nervous about the test.

Friday, November 7, 2014

Friday

Today in class I presented the project. Me and Ella are partners but she was not in class today due to the high school musical play. I was a little nervous about sharing by myself. So Mr. Schick asked one of the shadows if he would get up and help me present. He said sure. Wednesday we started sharing our project but the bell rang. We got to the first slide about government and how China is a communist country. Today I talked about Xi Jinping. I shared some facts about where and when he was born and what he did before becoming president of China. Also I shared that he has been president for 2 years and that all of Chinas presidents lead for 10 years. I then talk about how to get rid of a president. There are 3 ways to get rid of a president. Re elect, Impeach, and Assassination. Mr. Schick told us that it was wrong for people to hate and want to kill Obama or any president. He said that we should also put Assassination last because it is the worst. Then we went over the impeachment process. Lastly we talked about how many votes Xi jinxing got.

Wednesday, November 5, 2014

Wednesday

Today in class we started our presentations. The first project was on France. France has a republic government and a semi presidential system. This government was made in 1958. The President of France is Francois Hollande and the prime minister is Manuel Valls. They are apart of a Socialist Party. Hollande became president in 2012.  Valls was elected in 2014. It was then our turn to present. The country we chose was China. Our first slide was about Chinas government. China has a communist government. This means that Chinas government is greedy and the state controls economy. One example is that when you buy a car in America, the car dealership tells you the price of the car. In China the government makes up the price. Mr. Schick then got talking about how years ago they thought they had it good, Then once the internet was available, people realized that their government was greedy and controlling. We then ran out of time and couldn't finish our presentation.  Our next slides are about the President Xi Jinping. We don't have class tomorrow so we will finish Friday.

Tuesday

Today in class we went to cancer awareness tables. When I first got up there I saw the lungs. They were real pigs lungs. They had healthy lungs and not so healthy lungs. The lady stepped on something and it made the lungs pump. It was cool to see how lungs work. Then i got a pencil, pins, and stickers about breast cancer. My favorite part was when I put my head thru this machine. I could see all these dots on my face. Some dots meant that you had skin damage or your skin was oily or dry.

Monday, November 3, 2014

Monday

Today we had our long class. We went over the pop quiz we had about. Mr. Schick told us that we would see the questions again, possibly on the exams. We were supposed to share our slide shows, but most groups were not ready. I think my group was ready, but we just wanted to add more to make it better. We found some cool information on Xi JinPing. We found out that he got 99 percent of the votes and that 1 person voted against him. People were saying that they think it might have been a mistake or that the person was very brave. Also he will be serving for 10 years. Today was the last day to work on this project. Tomorrow we have class last mod. We will share our projects!

Wednesday, October 29, 2014

Wednesday

Today we added more information the our project. Mr.Schick went on our slide show and added some  questions. One question that he added was how long has Xi Jinping been in office. Today we actually finished our project.

Tuesday, October 28, 2014

Tuesday

Yesterday in class we got assigned a project. We had to find what kind of government that country has and how to get rid of a leader. Our country is China and China is a communist state.  This means that China's government controls everything.  Also, there are 3 ways to get rid of a president. Re-election, Assassination, and Impeachment.  Re- election is when you re -elect someone for another term. Assassination is when you kill the leader and impeachment  is when the leader breaks the law. They today in class we had to finish our project.

Monday, October 27, 2014

Monday

Today in class we went over the average scores on our pop quiz, our class got the lowest average score. We then had an assignment to do. We worked with a partner and had to find facts about the country's government. My partner is Ella and our country is China. China is a communist state. We also had to find out what communist meant. We then did some facts on the President of China which is Xi JinPing. Then we had to find a way that we could get the president out of office.

Pop Quiz

Today in class we had a pop quiz. I wasn't expecting this. There were 15 questions, each question counting as 2 points. Some questions were easy and some were hard. I wish I would have done better. I hope this doesn't drop my grade down. Mr. Schick then told us that he never went to a school dance in highschool.

Wednesday, October 22, 2014

Wednesday

Today in class we went over the facts about the leaders. We had to find some facts that made the leader a better leader. We also had to find which leader lost a family member. I tried looking for the answer but I couldn't find it. Someone then said that Israel's prime ministers brother died trying to save others. Next class will be on Friday!

Tuesday, October 21, 2014

Tuesday

Today in class we went over our homework. Our homework was to find fun facts about the countries leader. One facts that I found interesting was that Enrique Pena Nueto had many affairs. His looks made people vote for him. Also Vladimir Putin has a black belt in judo. Mr. Schick then told us that most of these leaders came to other countries to study about politics. They then moved back to their country.

Test Day

Today in class we had our test. I wish we had more time using the CIA World Fact book. We only had 10 minutes and I didn't get a couple of answers. The bonus questions were really hard! I think I did good on the other parts of the test. The fill in the blank questions were really easy. I hope I did good.

Test Review

Today in class we reviewed for our test on Friday. Mr. Schick told us that we can use he CIA World Fact Book website for a certain period of time. He also gave us vocal words we need to know.  We need to know life expectancy, CBR, CDR, developing nations, developed nations, RNI, NMR, immigration, emigration, push forces, pull forces, and TFR. We also went over infrastructure. It is what one country needs to connect with a different country. Also, if you know the birth and death rate you can figure out the rate of natural increase. You do births minus deaths. I feel prepared for this test!

Tuesday, October 7, 2014

Tuesday

Today in class we downloaded and set up spotify. Mr. Schick is a part of the pilot program. He gave us a code so we can have a premium account. After I downloaded it I set up an account. Then I tried to type in the code but it said wait 1 hour because there were so many people logging in at one time. So i came home and typed in the code again and it worked.

Monday

Today in class we looked at the CIA World Factbook. We started off trying to see what country is the best. We had to find facts saying how great America is or how bad America is. We also looked up other countries seeing if they are better then America. Then we got a little off topic and just started saying random facts about random countries.  I found out that an average American eats about 18 pounds of bacon. One fact I thought that was interesting is that Mexico has so many airports. They have almost 2,000 airports ranking third in the world. There are so many airports because of how many people visit Mexico for vacation. Today was birthday so I got to wear the cool hat.

Friday

Today in class we watched a video of people debating if America is the greatest counter ever. We then had a class debate. Some people said yes and some people said no. I say no. Even though our country is pretty great, I don't think its the best. A lot of people said yes because of the freedom that we have. That is true but a lot of other countries have freedom too. I think if we fix our problems then we could be the greatest country.

Wednesday, October 1, 2014

Wednesday

Today a lot of people were on their retreat. We finished watching the video. Mr. Shick told us that in Japan older people aren't living as long because they fought in war. In China they used to be able to only have 1 child because the country is so over populated. If people had more then 1 child then the government wouldn't pay for their schooling and they would have to pay  heavy taxes on their child. In China families always wanted a boy since they could only had one child. If they found out that they were having a girl, they would sometimes have an abortion.

Tuesday, September 30, 2014

Tuesday

Today in class we watched the video again, since Mr.Schick wasn't there on Monday. We then went over the population pyramid. The population pyramid is like a bar graph. It shows the population according to age and gender. It was interesting to see the how long people live in other countries. We also talked about pre industrialization, industrialization, and post industrialization. Tomorrow we will watch the rest of the video.

Monday, September 29, 2014

Monday

Today Mr. Schick was not here. On his blog was our assignment. We had to watch a video called "population pyramid" Some people did not have headphones so they only watched the video and could not hear it.  I learned that Nigeria has to same population as Russia. I was surprised to see that because Russia is much bigger then Nigeria. It also showed us how many people are being born and how many people are dying per minute. After watching the video we had to answer question about it. The questions were really easy. When we were done that we could do other school work or study. I listened to music and studied for my intro to bible test.

Friday, September 26, 2014

Friday

Today in class we went over the test a little bit. We talked about bombs and what they would do if their was a bomb threat. We also watched a video of people reacting to a bomb threat. When the siren rung that stopped what they were doing and took cover. They took this very serious. We then went on this CIA website. On this website you can find out anything about each country. We looked up the countries that had population increase and population decrease. Syria had the number 1 population decrease. People were leaving the country because they are scared for their life.

Wednesday, September 24, 2014

Wednesday

Today in class we got our test back. For every person who got an A, he rang his bell. Only a couple of people got an A.  I got 79%. I thought I did better, but next time I will study more. I did really good on the multiple choice. Not so good on the essay questions. I thought they were hard.  I really like multiple choice questions. I know that using our blog really helped me. Hopefully next time we will be able to use our blog again. Mr. Schick told us to keep the test for exams.

Population and Settlement

Today in class started talking about population and settlement. Mr Schick showed us a powerpoint and we took notes.

  • crude birth rate- is the number of births per 1000 of the population
  • crude death rate- is the number of deaths per 1000 of the population
  •  there are 7 billion people in the world
  • increasing by 73 million per year
  • most of the population growth is in countries that are poor and should not be having more children, such as Africa, Latin America, and South and East Asia.

Test Day

Today in class we had our test. Mr. Schick said that we could use our blog. I was relieved. I felt like i was prepared for the test today. The essay questions were a little hard, but i think I did okay. I felt like this was a fair test and i did not mind taking it.

Tuesday, September 16, 2014

Tuesday

Today Mr. Schick wasn't there, so we had a substitute. She told us to go to his  blog and see what we had to do in class. He told us to go to Quizlet and make flash cards to prepare for our test tomorrow. A couple of the girls and I formed a group. We made flashcards while listening to music and quizzed each other. After writing flash cards I feel more confident for the test.

Test on Wednesday

Today in class, we talked about our test that we are having on Wednesday. Mr. Schick told us some of the questions that were going to be on the test. He also asked what questions we think should be on there. The test will be will on these topics: Ancient Greece, Message to Garcia, Did you know, and Globalization and Americanization. We also talked about the new watch that is coming out and there is no need for a wallet if you have one of these watches.

Saturday, September 13, 2014

Today in class, we learned about Globalization. Globalization is the connection of different parts of the world. Which results in the expansion of international, cultural, economic, and political activities. We then saw a picture of a a Chinese building, which had a KFC and McDonalds in it. In China the life expectancy is going down because of fast food restaurants and cigarettes. There are a lot more cigarettes being sold in China than America. Before fast food restaurants and cigarettes, China had a higher life expectancy.  We talked a little about BCE which is Before Common Era. We also talked about the silk road. The silk road is a road in China that people took to trade silk with other countries.

Wednesday, September 10, 2014

Today in class we went over homework. Our homework was to watch the video again and find 3 interesting facts. We then discussed that people in other countries, especially India are taking American jobs. American people are teaching people from other countries how to speak English and do our jobs. I think this is a good and bad thing.

I think it is a good thing because we don't have to pay people from other countries as much as we have to pay Americans. If companies hired all Americans then prices would rise. It is bad thing because there won't be as many jobs for Americans.

Mr. Schick then told us that OK was the number one word and that most languages use the word OK.

"Shift Happens"

Today in Human Geo we watched a video called "shift happens". This video tells us facts about the world.

As you watch the video, pick out three of the facts presented, and consider the following:
  • What was your initial reaction to what you saw?
  • How are these changes manifesting themselves in your personal life?
  • How much of a role does technology play in your life?

   1.  If Facebook was a country, it would be the third largest country in the World. Behind China and India.
When i saw this fact I was shocked at first. Then i realized that their are so many people in the world who our on social media. A couple years ago Facebook was "the hit". Now Facebook isn't that popular in U.S, but people still get on. This changed my personal life because I rarely ever get on Facebook anymore. This doesn't play much of a role in my life because i didn't really like Facebook and now i don't get on.

2. China will soon be the number 1 English speaking country. I didn't really believe this because it is America and we speak English. Why would another country be speaking our language? But there are so many more people in China and most people in China are learning to speak English.

3. Facebook is available in more than 70 languages. I knew that Facebook had many languages, but not 70! Having Facebook in different languages gives people all over the world to enjoy social media.

Day 5

Today in class we learned that the "Message to Garcia" took place during the Spanish-American war, which took place mostly in Cuba. The President at the time needed to send a message to Garcia, so he made Roman deliver it. Roman did not complain nor make excuses. He worked hard to get the message delivered.  The author of this started printing out millions of copies so people would read them. We then talked about voting and how important it is it vote. We learned that only a little more than half of people vote. A lot of elderly people vote and younger people don't because they make up excuses not to vote. When our parents were growing up the voting age was 21, but it was changed to 18. I think the voting age should be 16. If at 16 we are reliable  enough to drive we should be able to vote.

Day 4

In the first part of Human Geography we reviewed how to add a blog. Most students were not doing it correctly, including myself.  Mr. Schick came showed us how to do it correctly. Mr. Schick then talked to us about the ALS Ice Bucket challenge. He told us that someone he knew passed away from ALS. We then watched the video of Mr. Schick doing the ice bucket challenge. He  then talked to us about how important it is to raise money to find a cure. If we wanted to we could do the ice bucket challenge and post it or send it to him tonight for homework. My cheer team got nominated to do the Ice Bucket Challenge. We excepted this challenge a couple of weeks ago. We also donated money to the ALS foundation. He also showed us how to change the title of our blog. At first mine was Day 1, but then I changed it to Gabby Durastanti's Blogs.

Day 3 Message to Garcia

  • Organization- When you're organized you don't have to spend time looking for lost papers. You can stay on schedule and be focused about you're school work. Being organized can help you get better grades.

  • Doing all your homework- when you do all of you're homework you don't have to worry about getting in trouble by you're teachers. Homework is a review of what you went over in class, so its helping you in the long run. Doing your homework adds extra points to your grade.

  • Joining a club- you will be able to meet students from all different grades. You will be able to interact with students who you normally would not interact with.

  • Study/ take good notes - studying every night will keep information fresh in your mind. When you take notes you should write as much as possible but make sure you understand.

  • Pay attention- paying attention in class will result in better grades. When you don't pay attention you will be lost and won't get good grades.

Day 2

Today, August 27, 2014, was my second day of Human Geography at John Carroll. The first half of the class Mr. Schick showed the students how to send their blog name to him. He then caught some other students up so everyone would be up to date and on the same page. The second half of class we went over the syllabus. In the syllabus he mentioned the hours he was available which are Monday through Friday from 7:30 to 8:00am and from 2:40 to 3:30pm. He also told us that his office is in room 121, but he taught in many other classrooms on the first floor. Mr. Schick showed us the grading scale. The grading scale showed us how many points homework, quizzes, tests, blogs, classwork, and projects are. Mr. Shick then said that their is no extra credit and everyday an assignment is late he takes 10 percent off you're grade. Lastly he told us the materials we need for Human Geography. I had a great second day.

1st day

Today, August 26, 2014, was my first day at John Carroll High School. First I went to Advisory and then I went to the gym to get my picture taken. The John Carroll faculty members then talked to us about upcoming events and the rules and regulations. Classes didn't start until 10 o'clock. I was very nervous that I was going to be late to class or not find my classes. All the other students and teachers were very nice and helpful. In most classes we introduced ourselves and in some classes we played the name game.  In other classes we went over teachers expectations and set up things on our computer.  I really enjoyed the free mods because it gave me time to eat lunch and talk to new and old friends. I was scared in the morning but by the end of the day I was much more comfortable. I had a great first day at John Carroll even though I'm very tired. I look forward to more good days ahead.
